Backdrop presents photographs from the highstreet, Strøget, in Copenhagen. At one end the smells of fast food and at the other of exclusive perfumes. Somewhere in the middle Prada is setting up an exclusive store, and to conceal the construction from passersby a fence decorated with an image of a curtain has been installed. Like a stage curtain that will be pulled aside in a moment to reveal a world of luxury. But for Ole Christiansen the image serves as a backdrop, and the pedestrian street becomes a stage on which humanity parades past.
This is street photography in its purest form. The photographer has no other tools than his technical skills and must simply freeze the rushing stream of passersby moment by moment. Position himself in relation to the light and the background and allowing chance to dictat. The result is a frieze, a storm of people on their way from one place to another, without purpose just presenting themselves in that moment in time.
